1. Jessica Simpson
Though the actress was a full-blown bombshell when she played Daisy Duke in The Dukes of Hazzard, she ballooned by 70 pounds during her back-to-back pregnancies. With the help of Weight Watchers, she lost the weight and recently revealed her transformed body on Good Morning America. Nearly back to bombshell status, her gorgeous curves have certainly bounced back.
Today, Simpson serves as one of several spokeswomen for the Weight Watches brand. Far from being embarrassed about her previous weight, she highlights her journey back to the curvy body she was once known for, and encourages other women to commit to their own weight loss goals.
2. Emma Watson
Growing up as Hermione in the Harry Potter films, the world watched as Watson progressed through a frizzy-haired, gangly and awkward adolescence until she finally emerged as a beautiful and confident woman. A sleek pixie cut replaced the frizzy locks and she embraces increasingly sexy looks as she continues to transform.
Watson’s growing interest in fashion has served to accent her transformation. Magazines such as People and Cosmopolitan picked up on her eye for style and have widely publicized her efforts. She also appeared on FHM’s 100 Sexiest Women list for six consecutive years, showing that she has come a long way since she first graced the silver screen.
3. Nicole Richie
Though she was a beautiful, healthy weight during her Simple Life days, Richie lost an astounding amount of weight over the years. After the birth of her two children, she continued to shrink and now looks gaunt and boney. Reporters and fans alike speculated for several years that Richie suffered from an eating disorder.
She went on record as saying that she does not suffer from anorexia, bulimia or any other sort of eating disorder. She did note, though, that she was seeking treatment for an inability to put on weight. Despite negative media attention and a stint of legal troubles, though, Richie has successfully used her fame to support her charity work.
4. Kelly Osbourne
During her family’s reality series, Osbourne’s weight ballooned and she hid behind ill-fitting punk-style clothing and crazy hairstyles while inwardly struggling with anxiety and drug use. After seven stints in rehab, she dropped 70 pounds. A feminine style replaced the punk clothes. She still likes to play with hair color, but her signature lavender-grey suits her perfectly.
Osbourne’s immediately recognizable style has also helped her land many appearances on television. She has appeared on shows as diverse as RuPaul’s Drag U, the Muppets, America’s Next Top Model and Phineas and Ferb. She is also an outspoken advocate of the LGBT community and has contributed her efforts to several charities.
5. Jonah Hill
The comedian’s weight has been on a rollercoaster the last few years. The heavy funnyman lost nearly 40 pounds in 2010, transforming him into a handsome leading man. However, he has recently gained the majority back. Whether heavy or thin, though, Hill has remained a fan favorite.
Thanks to his unique brand of comedy, he has landed roles in several well-known movies, including Superbad and Get Him to the Greek. More recently, Hill has appeared in films as diverse as Django Unchained and The Wolf of Wall Street, showing that he has developed the depth necessary to take on more challenging roles.
6. Mary Kate Olson
In 2004, the gaunt fashion icon entered rehab to battle an eating disorder. She emerged a year later with fuller cheeks and a healthy glow. She maintained the weight for several years but has recently been looking overly thin again. Fortunately, Olsen understands that fashion is as important to overall physical appearance as weight (or lack thereof.)
Along with her sister Ashley, Olsen has launched several major clothing lines. From the twins’ days of designing clothes for Wal Mart, they went on to offer more sophisticated fashions to high-end consumers. Olsen has also been praised for her commitment to the rights of the workers who produce clothing from the sisters’ lines.
7. Miley Cyrus
The world watched her grow up as sweet Hannah Montana with long brunette tresses. Today, Cyrus is anything but that innocent Disney star. As she tried to define her identity beyond her childhood role and famous father, Cyrus has engaged in increasingly bizarre behavior.
Her new edgy blonde hair and skimpy wardrobe are just the tip of the iceberg of this transformation. Cyrus shocked the world when she decided to appear nude in the video for her single Wrecking Ball, a pop-styles song with grittier influences than most former Disney stars are comfortable with. Her bizarre appearance at the 2013 VMAs further distanced her from the bubblegum persona that America once loved.
8. Jennifer Hudson
The actor and singer rose to fame on American Idol at size 16. After signing on as a spokesperson for Weight Watchers in 2010, she dropped 80 pounds to a svelte size 6. She has successfully kept the pounds off and has commented that her biggest challenge is not dipping below her goal weight. Like Jessica Simpson, Hudson refused to sweep her previous weight battles under the carpet.
By showing images of Hudson’s former self, her appearance in Weight Watchers ads sends the message, “Start where you are.” Hudson’s weight loss journey has undoubtedly inspired thousands of women to start their own weight loss efforts.
9. Charlize Theron
The beautiful actress was anything but glamorous in her 2003 film, Monster. She packed on 30 pounds by eating doughnuts to play the role of a prostitute and serial killer. Aging makeup and a tragic hairstyle completed the transformation, making her performance both believable and utterly disturbing.
Even long-time fans of Theron found it difficult to recognize this normally sultry beauty in the film. Happily, after filming was complete, Theron reversed the transformation by taking the weight off. Of course, ditching the creepy makeup and going back to a more sophisticated hairstyle also helped. Today, Theron is once again the svelte beauty than men everywhere know and love.
10. Matthew McConaughey
Hollywood hunk, Matthew McConaughey underwent a dramatic weight loss for his film, Dallas Buyer’s Club, shrinking his usual muscular frame by nearly 40 pounds to play an AIDS patient. Pairing the skinny look with a scruffy haircut and a thick moustache, McConaughey became almost unrecognizable. Today, he is well on his way back, but not quite to his full frame yet.
Despite his altered appearance, though, he has been able to remain successful in Hollywood. After the release of Dallas Buyer’s Club, McConaughey scored another win with the controversial film The Wolf of Wall Street. With such impressive roles under his belt, McConaughey is sure to remain a fixture in Hollywood for years to come.
